Building Bridges Session

July 22, 2022

We had a great session with Dan today. By the way, Dan is not the short form for Daniel. Dan is the name of the 12 sons of Jacob who was later named Israel. It is also the name of the 12 tribes of Israel. Daniel is the name of one of the prophets in the Old Testament.

Let me briefly provide you some of the resources that he shared with me:

Every country has a right to share about her own achievements.

Some bits and pieces about the culture and the people of Israel today:

Famous Golda Ice Cream

The Golda Icre Cream is found at every corner of the street all over Israel during hot summer months. Can you read the Hebrew word?

Recipes:

National Dish Falafel

Pita Bread

Episode 2 - Pita Bread

Jerusalem Mixed Grill (Meorav Yerushalmi):

Fact Check: Abu Ali Express

About the Druze community (דְרוּזִים)

Roll of Honour

These are the Israelis who have contributed a lot to their country (look out for the for the Druze soldier and see how many Muslim Arabs are also part of Israel’s independence)

Something about their independence days over the years...

The Father of Modern Hebrew

Google for the Father of Modern Hebrew, and the name Elizer Ben Yehuda will appear...

This is a good opportunity to build bridges -- and for people to meet a young man living in modern Israel to find out more about the country before you get the opportunity to go for your pilgrimage.

Dan is what you call the modern, secular Jewish young man, not the typical Hasidic Jewish religious rabbi that you have seen images of on the Internet.

The 21-year-old will share with us about the culture and the people in modern Israel. He was the one who got me interested in trying out some recipes of traditional Middle Eastern dishes that are popular in Israel. Maybe, some day when I have sufficient budget to travel to Israel, I would love to try out the food there.

You will also hear about the hoopoe, their national bird, and find out more about the nice places to visit when you try to Israel. He will also bring us to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on the earth.

As Dan is now serving the army as part of their national service, I have asked him to share with us about the Iron Dome as well.

Don't miss this opportunity to meet Dan on Zoom!

I have never tried this dish known as Hummus, but when Adeline Lau, a student of Hebrew from Kota Kinabalu, shared this picture after she had prepared the dish, I was impressed.

I just have to find time to try out my first Hummus. It is "a Middle Eastern dip, spread, or savory dish made from cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with tahini, lemon juice, and garlic. The standard garnish in the Middle East includes olive oil, a few whole chickpeas, parsley, and paprika." Read more here.

Just in case you can't find tahini, Adeline has this advice for us: "I did not have Tahini. So I pan fried black sesame seeds until it gave out a good fragrance. Added that into it to blend." Susie Thyaharaj let us know that we can get our tahini from either JAYA Grocer or Village Grocer.

You can watch this video to learn how to whip up your homemade hummus. This was shared earlier by another sister, Julie Victoria Jael.

This is the Turkish version:

Can we see more Hummus by others?

It's not easy to get Shakshuka in Malaysia. This Jewish dish is well-known in Israel, and if you visit Israel on your pilgrimage, they say you should at least try the dish once! It is like someone visiting Malaysia and never even tried Musang King durians!

Musang King is famous in Malaysia

Today (July 10, 2022), after two weeks being introduced the dish by a friend living in Israel, my daughter and I decided to give it a go.

It's not difficult. However, it would be great to have an extra pair of hands to help prepare the ingredients.

The secret to this recipe is what the lady in the video below said -- be generous with the spices. You can use any other spices that you choose. Spices give the dish a fragrant aroma.

I shall not steal the thunder from the lady who shared the recipe on Youtube below:

Let's see who else is trying out the Shakshuka for the whole family:

Esther Lim's Shakshuka 11 July 2022

"Made this Shakshuka for lunch and it was really delicious! Nothing is left!"

- Susie Thyaharaj (July 11, 2022)

1st attempt Shakshuka, spicy n delicious. Tq bro Stephen

-- Jennifer Lee (16 July 2022)

Inspired by Jennifer Lee's attempt today, this is my second attempt at Shakshuka (16 July 2022). It tastes a lot better than the first one, except that I should not cook the parsley even for half a minute.

"I cooked Shakshuka today. It was a hit with my family. The egg is hidden under all that tomato! 😊" - By Kamala 20 July 2022

Check this page - more Shakshuka to come!

Looks yummy, right? Everyone's Shakshuka will be different, depending on how much spiecesand the ingredients used. Why not try cooking it for your family?
